Story of our School

Laggan PS building

Laggan Public School is a rural school of 193 students nestled in North Glengarry County. The majority of the students are bused to school. Laggan serves children from junior kindergarten to grade six, offering Core French and French Immersion – grade 6.

The community values many Laggan traditional experiences such as the Christmas Concert, piano lessons and the high level of academic achievement of the students.  The school has a very active School Council and volunteer base who actively support all initiatives at Laggan Public School. Our school is currently celebrating our 50th Anniversary.  Many of our former students are now staff members at our school.  We have strong community ties with our families and community partners.

The Laggan Laird is our school mascot and logo, and was created in 1996 to represent Laggan at sporting events. A large mural of the Laggan Laird has been painted in our gym and is also represented at the top of our school letterhead. It is always interesting to learn about the history of different aspects of our school, the history of the Lairds is fascinating as it draws upon the culture of our geographic area. In 1996, a team of staff worked with students, parents and community to find a name and a mascot for our school. After consultation, the Laird was chosen to represent Laggan. A Laird is a Scottish lord, meaning landowner. The team working on this project felt that this was the perfect depiction as it is representative of the Scottish heritage represented by our area. The Laird gives our school a cultural identity and many aspects of the logo were created and researched with this in mind. If you look closely at the mural, you will notice that the tartan is the “Red Robertson” tartan worn by the MacLaggan family clan. The helmet in the mural is similar to the Gael’s soldier, so is representing the movement from the “little school” to the “big school”. The print of Laggan and Lairds is written in Gaelic print. Local Gaelic teachers, Ken and Ann McKenna helped with this. A former student, now deceased, named Shannon Jamison had a strong artistic flair and played a large role in creating the design of mural.
